The product’s creative process starts well before production, when a piece is imagined and thought out into a design. In this phase, we concentrate on bringing to life products that will prevail in time, opting for simple and ageless designs that enhance the material and not any current trends.

Building upon her mother's legacy, Mónica, after graduating in Design from Barcelona, infused her creativity and expertise into our brand. As our head designer, Mónica shapes the identity of HMD Furniture, curating collections that blend sophistication with practicality and developing the voice and brand of HMD Furniture.

Nina, coming from an economic background, joined the team to develop new strategies in the realms of commerce, finance, and business vision.

Monica is the head and heart behind HMD's designs. The mastering of talent Monica has to offer reflects in her graphic and straight-lined pieces. Her aim is to showcase nature and the materials in a way they remain the star of the piece while becoming even more extraordinary combined with the design, much like any artform.

Since a child, paper and pencil have followed her to the playground while others were busy.

She observed nature and found ways to capture the beauty her own eyes saw. When a bit older she was introduced to the world of furniture and interior concept, and she learned how that can be an opportunity to express art where we spend most of our time – at home.

Starting from a graphic design base, she completed her studies in Barcelona's design school BAU in 2005. From there she began a career in advertising and marketing, using her uniqueness to create fun and strong lines in any project encountered. Much like the city she studied in, Monica has the influence of the Mediterranean life and lines that alongside the BAUHAUS influence you can sense in her work, make the perfect alignment of sobriety and movement.

Her passion for product design led her to abandon her career as a marketeer and fall completely in the furniture area since 2011. 

Her first work included the ARISTO collection, a tribute to her love for geometry.

With time, the lines became less straight and warmer, and movement has had a big impact on the next designs: with a twist of brutalism, you can see this in the FROG or BULL collections.

The craft kept evolving and it is evident that strong lines made part of Monica’s signature look. We look at pieces such as the NEGRONI showcase and cabinet or the MIRA tables and we understand there is a storytelling and harmonious process in the growth of the designer and the collection.

In 2018 she design and developed the iconic BOLACHA PORTABLE lamp with H.ISLE - the French lamp manufacturer.

In 2024 we can see the new direction Monica’s art is taking, with designs like the DUDA table, the JOJO desk and console or the NOTE collection, Monica is standing by a masculine, yet warm inspiration and the feedback received in Milan during the design week just confirmed she is in the right path.

 Welcome to HMD Furniture. Established in 1991 by the visionary Graça Cardoso da Silva, our journey began with a passion for quality craftsmanship and good design.  [Since a little child, Monica brought her paper and pencil everywhere, her practice has led her to understand what she wanted to do in the future. In parallel, she rejoiced when spending hours in the middle of wood dust and talking with carpenters and architects building products and spaces alike. In her teenage years, she fell in love with Graphic Design and went to Barcelona to follow this creative energy. There she developed a very personal style between the warm color and the life of the city, the love for illustrations and typography drifted her apart from furniture for a while.

She left Barcelona to build a name for herself in the marketing and advertising field and, after a few years as a brilliant marketeer, she finally returned to the family tradition of furniture design and craft.

Now, the whole company has Monica’s view and talent on it. Every visual detail is supervised and approved by her and the brand showcases clearly what is on her mind.]

local suppliers and production ensure a reduction in transport emissions and transparent traceability of the products.

Using waste to create beauty:

materials like MDF, engineered marble or fabrics made from recycled fibres are a way to give good use to something that would be transformed in waste otherwise.

MDF is made from wood fibre, shavings and sawdust – all parts of the wood that are not normally used. This makes it an excellent high quality and versatile product for furniture building. Although it is not recyclable after use, it is biodegradable so, after its long life, it can be a part of nature once again.

Engineered marble

made from stone waste, with 70% of its products coming from Portuguese or Spanish mines, this material allows the repurposed waste from other production lines. 

European fabrics

working with mills located within the EU, our fabric selection is focused on suppliers whose practices are aligned with a green vision. This reflects on the process of transforming yarn into beautiful fabrics through upcycling bio-based materials, staying true to ethical sourcing and zero waste processes.

Fair business

although we have reduced to one our yearly participation in fairs – we only do the Salone International del mobile in Milan – this is usually a very wasteful process as it implies building a real scenario for a week of existence. Because this was always on our minds, we researched and finally found a partner that allowed us to reuse 97% of the stand materials year after year. Our design team is repeatedly challenged to find new ways to show our work without adding any extra waste to the world.

Ageless design:

focusing on the best quality and a design that is not in itself the star, we contribute to less consumption and better selection - therefore a more sustainable society. We believe in creating icons and perpetual collections, distancing ourselves from fashionable and temporary products.

We do not overlook the details that add value to our products, we know that a product is a construct of the materials it is made of, the thoughtful work of the person who designed it for its best use, and the way it is produced, packed and delivered to the customer.
